노무현 대통령은 2003년 6월 18일 취임 후 가진 첫 은행장 초청 오찬 인사말에서 "우리나라 금융이 어려운 시기를 겪었으나 구조조정을 잘했고, 몇몇 국책은행 외에 모든 은행 자율권을 확보하고 경제원리와 시장원리에 따라 독립적인 경영을 하게 된 것이 가장 큰 성과"라고 말했다.
